もたせる【持たせる】

1 〔持つようにさせる; 与える〕 let sb have [take]; put sb in possession of sth; give.

●妻を持たせる get a wife for sb

・息子に店を持たせる get one's son to open [start] a store [shop]; let one's son start [set up] in business

・花を持たせる ⇒はな¹

・言葉に含みを持たせる make a suggestive remark; utter words with hidden [implied] meanings

・政策に一貫性を持たせる follow [adopt] a consistent policy

・生徒の学習上の選択の範囲に幅を持たせる allow [permit] the pupils some latitude in deciding what they want to learn

・子供に刃物を持たせない keep edged tools from children.

●子供に大金は持たせないほうがよい. You shouldn't give too much money to a child.

・娘に卒業証書を持たせて写真を撮った. I took a photograph of my daughter holding her diploma.

2 〔持って行かせる; 運ばせる〕 make [let, have] sb carry sth; get sb to carry [take] sth; send 《sth by sb》.

●秘書に書類かばんを持たせる have the secretary carry one's briefcase

・使いの者に手紙を持たせる send a letter with an assistant; send an assistant with a letter

・子供に傘を持たせる send one's child off 《to school》 with an umbrella.

●修学旅行の小遣いはいくら持たせたらいいのでしょうか. How much pocket money should we let our children bring [give our children] for the school trip?

・彼女はいつも夫に荷物を持たせる. She always has her husband carry the packages.

・花束はだれかにお宅まで持たせてやりましょう. I'll have somebody take the bouquet to your house.

3 〔保たせる〕 keep; preserve.

●身内の人がかけつけるまで病人の命を持たせる keep the patient alive until his relatives arrive

・酢でもたせてある魚 fish preserved with [in] vinegar

・機械を長く持たせる prolong the life of a machine

・切り花を長く持たせる make cut flowers keep longer.

4 〔負担させる〕 make sb bear [pay] 《the expenses》.

●だれに食事の勘定を持たせるつもりなんですか. Who are you going to ask to pay (the bill) for the meal?

5 〔期待させる〕

●気を持たせる encourage sb to think [expect] sth; raise sb's hopes.
